We take a break from the Coming To Jakarta readings to discuss Peter’s new poetry collection: Tilting Point.

  1. I should have included these two notes (from Wikipedia) to “Tilting Point”:

JUBAL: Jubal was a descendant of Cain, the son of Lamech and Adah, and … is described as the “ancestor of all who played the harp and flute.”

URTHONA: In the mythological writings of William Blake, Urthona is one of the four Zoas, who were created when Albion, the primordial man, was divided fourfold. Specifically, he is the Zoa of inspiration and creativity, and he is a blacksmith god.

  2. Fuller notes to “Homing”:

    NOTES

For my thoughts on Genesis 50.25, see Peter Dale Scott, Parashat Vayechi, Congregation Netivot Shalom, January 7, 2012, http://netivotshalom.org/5772-vayechi-Scott. Cf. also Richard Wolin, Walter Benjamin: An Aesthetic of Redemption, 234: “For Bloch,… ‘[The] great work of art is a reflection, a star of anticipation and a song of consolation on the way home through darkness’…. to light the way toward the long sought after homeland.” For my use of the quotes from Ernst Bloch and Wolin, see Peter Dale Scott, Minding the Darkness, V.ii, 239; cf. Coming to Jakarta, I.iii, 15, etc.

Jubal was a descendant of Cain, the son of Lamech and Adah, and … is described as the ” the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.” He is often contrasted with his half-brother Tubal-cain, “forger of all instruments of bronze and iron” (Gen 4:21-22).

In the mythological writings of William Blake, Urthona is one of the four Zoas, who were created when Albion, the primordial man, was divided fourfold. Specifically, he is the Zoa of inspiration and creativity, and he is a blacksmith god. Cf, Blake, ed. Erdman and Bloom, Complete Poetry, 406: “Terrible the distress/ Of all the Nations of Earth ground in the Mills of Urthona.”
